Athlete Stories

“Ruth has taught me many valuable things that helped me to become not only a better athlete, but a better person. Techniques I learned through my time with Ruth and will continue to utilize include:

- Breathing techniques that can help me stay calm and lock in before a race, or anytime I'm feeling anxious.

- Daily journaling to reflect on my day and workouts.

- Pre-race techniques that mentally prepare me to do my best.

With Ruth’s help I was able to earn All-State as well as breaking 2 school records this fall, goals I’ve had for years.”

“RBM sports coaching helped me through such a tough time in my sport and I’m forever grateful for that! Ruth is one of the nicest people I have met and made me feel heard and valid in my athletic struggles. Ruth helped me find my love for my sport again when I didn’t think that was possible.“

—High School student-athlete

“I really enjoyed working with Ruth. She was easy to work with and is relatable. Ruth took the time to get to know me as well as my specific sport. After working with her, I feel more confident in my ability to do well in competitions.”

—Collegiate Student-Athlete

"Working with Ruth was one of the best decisions we made as parents. We knew our son wanted to be a better athlete, but what we received was a more resilient and growth-oriented teenager. We watched Aidan’s entire mindset change and his communication skills develop at a deeper level. His ability to overcome setbacks, not only in sport, but in life, became easy as he had the ability to use the skills he learned to take a very healthy approach to the problem at hand. Aidan is not only demonstrating a responsible commitment to his sport, but he developed goals as a leader, mentor, teammate and friend. Teenagers strive for self-acceptance and the ability to use their emotions in a constructive manner, Ruth helped him do this AND he had a great time learning various skillsets. Each week I heard him laughing and interacting as he met with Ruth and what we least expected to take away from the experience was the one which shifted our paradigm as a family the most…he developed character-building skills he will use for a lifetime. Thanks, Ruth, for the positive impact you have had on our son and family!"

“ Working with Ruth has been a transformational experience! She has helped me to change my negative thinking and given me the skills needed to not only improve my running performance, but she has also taught me how to incorporate the tools into my daily life. She is the fix I needed to get my running back on track! I am so lucky to be able to work with her.”

— Therese, Distance Runner

“Working with Ruth greatly exceeded my expectations. Being a competitive athlete for most of my life, I thought I already had a pretty good mental game. I was skeptical if I would gain much, but I am always looking for an edge, so I was interested in Ruth's program. I typically do not talk about (or even think about) things much beyond surface level. Ruth was able to help me peel back a few layers on why I do what I do. To my surprise, this was incredibly beneficial when things got tough during hard training sessions and competition. I learned mental strategies from Ruth that made it easier to (safely) keep pushing when I really wanted to stop. I no longer dread when I have a hard training run on my schedule, because I know I'm now armed with mental strategies to take on the challenge.”

— Tim D. Goal to break 3hrs: Goal achieved: 2:58:36!

Prior to working with Ruth, I didn't realize how much my mindset was getting in the way of achieving my ultimate goal: being a runner for life. By comparing my story to others' journeys, I rob the joy from MY experience of running and racing, not the recipe for lifelong enjoyment of an activity. I've also avoided goal setting, probably because it introduces the possibility of failure, but Ruth helped me set process-oriented goals that weren't so dependent on the outcome, so I could still achieve a "B" or "C" goal even if I didn't reach my "A" goal. I still have plenty of work to do, but the awareness I gained from working with Ruth has already helped me in longer races and I'll continue to focus on the story I'm telling myself.

“Coach Ruth is an outstanding leader, teacher, and coach! She goes above and beyond to create strong, independent, self thinkers that acquire compassion, drive, and integrity. She thrives on instilling confidence, perseverance, and a love for the game.  Our 14 year old daughter believes Coach Ruth has taught her to have confidence to take on opponents, believe in herself when she has the ball, and if she makes a mistake, to learn from it and how to change it the next time. Our daughter once shared, “Even when you lose, you win because you learn from it!” From Ruth, our daughter faces each game as a new challenge, goes out there to give it her all, has fun with her team, and walks away knowing every game is a win because she is joyful and is growing as an athlete. Coach Ruth has instilled confidence off the field as well. We are proud to see our daughter learn from Ruth’s ability to bring a team together and teach the importance of giving back to their community. Watching our daughter help others and come back with a big smile to tell us all about how much fun she had means the world to us. We are thankful for the well rounded athletes and strong, caring citizens Coach Ruth helps create, and we know she is a great gift to our daughter and family.
